چکیده

The ability of some fishes to live in both sea water and fresh water has attracted a great deal of interest. Many euryhaline fishes are difficult to rear in laboratory conditions ; some do not survive in completely fresh water, and migratory fishes are often euryhaline for only limited periods during their life-history. Species of the genus Tilapia have none of these disadvantages; they are easily reared, they tolerate salinities as low as o-i mM-Na/1. and can be transferred abruptly between fresh and sea water. Further, they are able to survive very high salinities (to 69 %o, Spector, 1956, p. 456). The main features of sodium and water balance have been studied in Tilapia mossambica. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Physiol. 2 13 (6) : 1582-l 584. 1967.-Renin activity was measured in the plasma of two species of tuna and one species of a euryhaline fish (Tilapia mossambica) which was adapted to fresh water for varying periods of time. In addition renin activities were also measured in five species of C...

Eco-morphological differentiation in Lake Magadi tilapia, an extremophile cichlid fish living in hot, alkaline and hypersaline lakes in East Africa.

Ecological diversification through divergent selection is thought to be a major force during the process of adaptive radiations. However, the large sizes and complexity of most radiations such as those of the cichlids in the African Great Lakes make it impossible to infer the exact evolutionary history of any population divergence event. The genus Alcolapia, a small cichlid lineage endemic to L...

Mammalian metabolic rates in the hottest fish on earth

The Magadi tilapia, Alcolapia grahami, a small cichlid fish of Lake Magadi, Kenya lives in one of the most challenging aquatic environments on earth, characterized by very high alkalinity, unusual water chemistry, and extreme O2, ROS, and temperature regimes. In contrast to most fishes which live at temperatures substantially lower than the 36-40 °C of mammals and birds, an isolated population ...

Sodium, chloride and water balance of the intertidal teleost, Xiphister atropurpureus. I. Regulation of plasma concentration and body water content.

Studies of the sodium, chloride and water balance of Xiphister atropurpureus (Evans, 1967 a-c) showed that this intertidal teleost is relatively impermeable to these ions and to water, has an exchange-diffusion system for sodium only, and apparently lowers its permeability to sodium but not to chloride or water when acclimated to a lower salinity. An investigation of the intertidal teleost, Pho...
